WHY I COMM-ADORE MY COMMODORE
by Roger Hoyer
I've used my C64, Plus/4 and 128
for almost 19 years. They're easy to
use, seldom crash and I've had very
few equipment problems with them
(knock on wood!). True, I've upgraded
my 128 and SX64 with JiffyDOS, I have
two FD2000's, a SCPU128 and an HD1000.
I have keep my wife's Tupperware
books, my picture framing business and
our household accounts on accounting
software for all 3 computers. The
first accounting software I used was a
tax deduction program I typed in from
RUN magazine and modified for the two
businesses and household.
I've done publicity for the
Cincinnati Commodore Club since 1988
using Speedscript 64 and 128,
ScriptPlus (for the +4) and the Write
Stuff. I realize I could use Email but
not all of the 21 places I send
notices to have email and it's easier
to use one medium than two. I also do
publicity for our Church every week
and for special occasions.
I was Financial Secretary for my
former Church, keeping records using
Vizastar 64 and 128 (which was written
in 1986 and is [Y2K compliant]). I use
Vizastar 128 for all my framing price
lists and pricing structures as well
as keeping records as Treasurer for a
local interfaith food
pantry/assistance program.
In 1996 our club started accepting
donations from callers who didn't want
to throw their C= stuff in the trash.
My idea, my job! Our VP keeps all the
hardware in his barn and I keep all
the rest in my basement. I keep the
inventory on Superbase 128 v3.0 (also
[Y2K compliant]), going from a single
1571 disk to two 3.5 disks with the
records on one disk and the programs
that control them on another. Try as I
might I haven't gotten SB128 to
recognize a native CMD partition! Our
club has sold items over the Internet,
Mailink and Loadstar, sending items
all over the country, Canada and
Australia.
Since I have been using Commodores
all these years, I can't see any point
in changing formats now. I'd either
have to keep the Commies for 7 years
(statute of limitations) or convert
everything to Mac or Messy-DOS. Plus I
still have LOTS of programs I haven't
had a chance to try yet!
I don't use GEOS much -- I didn't
like the slow disk access or printing.
I've had Wheels128 for about as long
as it's been out and still haven't
tried it. Sorry, Maurice -- ONE OF
THESE DAYS I'll have time to play with
it. I was lucky enough to retire from
GE just as they were beginning to
force everbody to switch to Windoze
apps. I hated that sluggish, crash
crazy, sloppily written software with
a passion. All the macros and
applications I spent ten years
developing for Lotus 123, QuattroPro,
Paradox, Alpha4 and FoxPro 2.5 had to
be abandoned because they either
wouldn't work in Windoze or weren't
Y2K complaint.
As for speed, one of the
newsletters I read pointed out that
because of housekeeping chores, that a
128 with 128k of memory running at
1mhz operates as fast as a Pentium
with 128gig of memory running at
1000mhz. So a 128 running at 2mhz
would be twice as fast and with a SCPU
would be 20x as fast.
And finally, NOBODY at CBM ever
said that 640k of memory was more than
anybody would ever need. C64's and
128's can be expanded to 16mb with no
problems. Who was more foresighted???
